Bio

Dr. Robert B. Petters, Emeritus Professor at North Carolina State University, continues to teach and conduct after retiring as the Chair of the Department of Music. He received a B.Music degree from Lawrence Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin and M.M and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. As a UM graduate teaching fellow, he taught instrumental conducting with Elizabeth Green, taught instrumental methods and materials, observed student teachers, and served as an orchestra rehearsal conductor for Theo Alcantera and Joseph Blatt.

After teaching elementary instrumental music and conducting bands, orchestras, and choirs in public schools in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, he was appointed an Assistant Professor of Conducting and Music Education at the University of Michigan, where he taught instrumental conducting and string methods, advised music education majors, and conducted the Michigan Youth Symphony and the University Campus Orchestra.

Dr. Petters came to North Carolina State University in 1976. As an Assistant Director of Music, he conducted the Raleigh Civic Symphony, the Fanfare (concert) Band, taught history and appreciation classes, and served as the project director/administrator of the Raleigh-Wake County Symphony Orchestra Development Association. He created a class for general college students titled “Introduction to Musical Experiences” which he still teaches.
