Big Plans for RCS and RCCO

This Spring semester is a particularly special one for the NC State Orchestras, as director Peter Askim has put together not one, but two high-profile programs this semester.

The Raleigh Civic Symphony was awarded a sustainability grant for a program in conjunction with the NC State Sustainability Office, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the NC State Earth Week committee, and numerous partners from NC State and the Triangle. The Symphony will perform the East Coast premiere of The Great Animal Orchestra Symphony, a unique work that combines the soundscapes of live animals in their natural environments, recorded by Dr. Bernie Krause, with the symphony orchestra in a piece written by composer Richard Blackford.

For its part, the Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra will be performing Peter and the Wolf, an apt piece for Director Peter Askim to be conducting with the NC State Wolfpack. The piece, which often serves as children’s introduction to the instruments of the orchestra, features narration to tell a story with the different instruments playing different roles. Harry Shearer, voice of numerous characters on the Simpsons, will be bringing his considerable voice acting talents to the stage to play the part of the narrator.
