Music of Nature, Myth and Place

Guitarist and composer Jeff Peterson
Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra

100 Years of Parks: Music of Nature, Myth and Place
Sunday, November 6 at 4pm
Stewart Theatre

In partnership with the NC State College of Natural Resources and the NC State Sustainability Fund, the Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra will present a concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of both national and North Carolina parks. The concert will explore music depicting nature and myth, including Debussy’s Prélude à l’aprés-midi d’un faune and Mendelssohn’s Overture to The Fair Melusine.

As part of the concert, the orchestra will perform Virgil Thomson’s music for the film The Plow That Broke the Plains, live with the film. The film is a 1936 U.S. government documentary about the Dust Bowl and its effects. Special guest WRAL’s Bill Leslie will narrate the performance.

The concert will also feature the World Premiere of two-time Grammy-winner Jeff Peterson’s Concerto for Slack Key Guitar, inspired by the natural beauty of Maui and Haleakala National Park.

Related on-campus events (presented with the College of Natural Resources) will include a seminar by the director of the National Park Service, a seminar by the director of the NC State Park System, and a visit by the nation’s leading John Muir interpreter (Muir is called the “Father of the National Parks,” and was co-founder of the Sierra Club).

The winners of the NC State Century of Parks photo contest will also be featured at the concert, and the performance will be preceded by a Hula performance in the lobby of Stewart Theatre by the Hawai’i Club of North Carolina.
